deaf 是「耳聾」的意思。如果某個人有耳朵是聾的，他如果將聾的耳朵轉向你這一邊，那他當然沒聽到你說話，所以這個片語的意思就是表示他不想聽你說話。英文的解釋就是 refuse to listen。
這個片語其實由來已久，在十五世紀的時候就出現在英文中了。另外一個意思相似的片語是 fall on deaf ears。（注意，此時 ears 要用複數）
例如，Any advice we gave him about improving his work seems to fall on deaf ears（我們針對他的作品所提出任何的改進意見，他似乎都充耳不聞）。
turn a deaf ear 的相反詞是 (someone) is all ears。當有人說 I'm all ears 的時候，這表示說話者已經準備好要洗耳恭聽，要傾聽對方說話了。
另外一個有趣的片語是 lend (one's) ears。字面意思是「借（某人）的耳朵」意思是「請傾聽（某人）說」。莎士比亞的名劇《凱撒大帝》中有一句：Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears...（各位朋友，各位羅馬人民，各位同胞，請聽我說……）

turn away移開；趕走（某人）

Peter turned away, unable to look into Ben's eyes.
彼得把目光移開，不敢看班的眼睛。
Turn your head away; you don't want to see this.
把頭轉開，你不會想看這個。
Vickie always turns salesmen away.
薇琪總是把推銷員趕走。
Helen begged Sean not to turn her away.

turn away 在第三和第四個例句中含有「拒絕」的意思，所以，這個片語另外也含有「不得其門而入」的意思。例如：
The theater was full, and many people had to be turned away.
戲院擠滿了人，許多觀眾不得其門而入。

turn back折回；轉回；回到（原先的）

We had to turn back and return home because it was getting dark.
因為天色漸漸暗了，我們得折回家去。
The company had to turn back in its marketing plans after the economy changed.
經濟情勢改變之後，公司得回到原來的行銷計畫。

turn down拒絕；降低音量

John asked Lisa to marry him, but she turned him down.
約翰向麗莎求婚，但她拒絕了他。
Nick got a job offer, but had to turn it down.
尼克獲得了這份工作，但他得拒絕。
Harry turned down the stereo so that he could answer the phone.
哈利把音響的音量調小，這樣他才好講電話。
Please turn down the TV; it's too loud.

turn down 在作「拒絕」時，英文的解釋就是 refuse。這個片語除了可以用來「拒絕別人」，也可以說 turn down (something)。例如，當別人問你：「你可以拒絕這一大筆錢嗎？」英文就是 could you turn down such a huge ampunt of money?
turn down 還可以指「調低音量」，或是像其他像冷氣、暖氣等電器用品調小；例如把暖氣開關調小就是 turn down the heater。另外，像是「如果太冷，你可以把冷氣調小。」英文是 you can turn down the AC (air conditioner) if it's too cold。
相反地，如果要將「開關調大」，英文可以用 turn up 這個片語表達。關於 turn up 的介紹，請見本單元第十個片語。

turn in繳交；上床睡覺

I turned my homework in to the teacher.
我把功課交給老師。
We turned the gun in to the police.
我們把槍交給警察。
Mindy usually turns in around ten.
茗蒂通常在十點上床睡覺。
I am going to turn in now.
我現在要去睡了。

turn in 作「繳交」的時候，後面常常會加 to，再接上「要繳交東西的對象」。如果沒有要繳交的對象，就可以不用加 to。例如，第一個例句，我們也可以說：
I turn the homework in.
I turn in the homework.
I turn in the homework to the teacher.
其他片語像 hand in、hand over 也有相似的意思。
在第三句和第四句中，turn in 是非正式用法，也表示是 go to bed 的意思。
另外一個和 turn in 長像很相似的片語是 turn into，是「改變」的意思，與 change into 意思相似。如果要把 A 改成 B，我們可以說 turn A into B。我們可以一起看看下面的例子：
The teacher turned a very bad class into a very good one.
老師把這堂爛課變得精彩絕倫。
The kiss turned the frog into a handsome prince.
這一吻把青蛙變成了英俊的王子。

如果把 turn in 倒過來，變成 in turn，又是麼意思呢？
in turn 是「輪流地；依次地」的意思。所以
「瑟琳娜察看病房，輪流和每個病人講話」。英文就是 Selena went round the ward, talking to each patient in turn.

turn on打開（開關）；攻擊

Please turn on the light.
請把燈打開。
The machines are turned on at seven each morning.
機器在每天早上七點打開。
The team turned on its coach.
隊員攻擊教練。
The dog turned on its master.
這隻狗攻擊牠的主人。

turn on 用來指「打開電器的開關」，有些人「開燈」會說成 open the light，其實是不正確的中式英文喔。還有，「打開」水龍頭，也是用 turn on 這個片語！
除了 turn on 之外，switch on 也有相同的意思。
「打開」是 turn on，所以相反詞「關上」就是 turn off 或是 switch off。
這幾個片語之後接受詞如 the light，你也可以把受詞放在前面。
除了「打開（開關）」之外，turn on 還有「攻擊」的意思，要特別注意的是，turn on 是指「突然攻擊」的意思，與「打開（開關）」是不同的。
但是要注意，在作這個意思解釋時，只能說 turn on (someone)，千萬不能說 turn (someone) on，因為後者是指「使（某人）在（性方面）產生刺激或快感」。只是介係詞的位置對調，意思就有這麼大的差異，真是失之毫釐，差之千釐啊！
除了 turn on 之外，英文中還可以用 turn against 去表示「攻擊」別人。

turn out參加；結果變成

How many people turned out for the party?
有多少人來參加派對？
Not enough people turned out to have the class.
來上課的人數不夠多。
James turned out to be a very good driver.
詹姆士最後成為很棒的駕駛人。
The movie turned out to be very boring.
這部電影竟然這麼無聊。

turn out 最常用的意思是「結果演變成……」，我們再來看看下面的例子增加對這個片語的瞭解：
The party turned out a success.
舞會最後辦得很成功。
The weather turned out nice today.
結果今天天氣變好了。
另外，turn 和 out 兩個字連在一起的時候，是作名詞用，turnout 的意思是「出席人數；選舉的實際投票人數」。例如：
Coldplay's concert had a good turnout.
酷玩演唱會參加的人數不少。
There was a huge turnout for the US presidential election.
這次美國總統大選投票的人數非常踴躍。

turn over a new leaf重新做人

After losing his money gambling, Ron promised to turn over a new leaf.
隆恩賭博把錢輸光之後，他決定改頭換面，重新做人。
I have made too many mistakes; I am going to turn over a new leaf.
我已經犯了太多錯，我決定要洗心革面，改過自新。

leaf 在這個片語中，是指「書頁」的意思。turn over a new leaf 字面上的意思是「重新翻開嶄新的一頁」，也就是指「改過自新，重新做人」。

turn (something) to (one's) advantage把局勢變成對（某人）有利的情況
The students insisted on watching TV; their English teacher forced them to watch only English TV, turning the situation to her advantage.
學生們堅持要看電視，老師便強迫他們只能看有英文節目的電視，將情況扭轉成對她有利的情勢。
Vickie tried to find a way to turn things to her advantage.
薇琪試著找出辦法化危機為轉機。

這個片語是指「將原來不利的情況轉變成對自己有利的情勢」。另外一個片語 take advantage of (someone) 長得和這個片語很像，意思是「佔（某人）的便宜」。

turn up（開關）調大；被找到

Don't turn up the volume too much.
不要把音量調太大。
The president turned up the intensity of his speech.
總統提高他演說的音量。
The missing money turned up in the boy's pocket.
不見的錢在小男孩的口袋裡找到。
Don't worry about your cat; it'll turn up.

turn up 和可以用在「將（電器或是水龍頭的）調大」。如果我們說「把水龍頭開大一點。」英文的表達方式是 turn up the faucet.
