come a long way 從字面上看是「經過長距離而抵達」的意思，之後引申意為「進步很多；有長足的發展」。因為進步是一步一步，並非一蹴可幾的，所以這個片語常常使用完成式，表示這樣的進步是從過去發生，未來仍然會延續下去。例如，我們說「生物技術自九０年代以來，已經有長足的進步」。英文是 biotechnology has come a long way since the 1990s。
另一個和 come a long way 類似的片語是 come far。小羅斯福總統在一九三七年第二任就職演說中提到：true, we have come far from the days of stagnation and despair，這句話的意思就是「我們的確從蕭條絕望的日子一路走了過來」。在這裡 come far 的含意就是他們現在已經從最艱困的日子撐過來了。
比較這兩個片語，可以注意到這兩個片語的例句都用了完成式，不同的地方在於：come a long way 後面加的是 with，而 come far 後面加的是 from。這兩個片語的異同處，讀者可要仔細釐清喔！

英文中意思是「無意間發現或是看到」的片語，除了這裡介紹的 come across 之外，下面還有幾個意思類似的片語很值得認識：
A bump into B 無意間巧遇某人，或是和某人不期而遇。
例如：
It was embarrassing for him to bump into one of his ex-girlfriends last night.
昨天晚上撞見其中一個前女友真是讓他尷尬。

細心的讀者可能有注意到，在上面的例句中，come along 有時候有加 with，有時候卻沒有。那是因為如果 come along 後面如果還有名詞（或是代名詞）的話，就需要加介係詞 with，不然就不用加介係詞 with。
除此之外，come along 還可以用於邀請別人。例如，邀請別人去跳舞，我們可以說：come along, let's hit the dance floor。（一起來吧，我們跳舞去。）如果你和一票朋友去看電影，後來要再邀別的朋友加入，就可以說：come along with us（一起來嘛！）。
come along with 的相似詞是 go along with。兩者意義幾乎一樣，但是 come along with 是實質上「跟隨」的意思，而 go along 除了有實質上跟隨的意義之外，還能用於抽象意義上的「贊成、支持」。

come out 和 go out 都可指從裡面到外面的動作。差別在於說話者所在的位置不同。come out 是人在外面，要人從裡面出來，而 go out 是人在裡面，命令別人出去。
come out 作「上市」的時候，通常是指書籍的出版、電影或是流行品的上市。
come out 還有一個很特殊的用法。同性戀者公開向人表明自己的性向稱為「出櫃」，英文是 come out，由 come out of the closet 簡化而成；沒有出櫃的同志則是 in the closet。電影《新郎向後跑》的英文片名是 In and Out，內容敘述以為自己是異性戀的男主角終於發現並接受自己是同志、之後再坦然出櫃的經過，所以片名中的 in 就是指 in the closet，out 即指 out of the closet。

come over 通常都是用在朋友間的拜訪，是比較輕鬆、方便，不用發邀請函的拜訪。假設今天你的朋友剛好要到你家附近，你又剛好閒著，你可以告訴他 come over and hang out with me。（過來找我一起鬼混吧。），或是 come over and have dinner with me。（過來和我一道吃晚餐吧。）
但是，如果今天你住在西藏，你的朋友住在莫三比克，你不會跟你朋友說 come over（因為實在太遠了……）。有時候也可以用 come on over，或是 come by 表示 come over。
和 come over 意義類似的片語還有 stop by 和 drop by。不過這些片語還是有點差別。如果用 come over，是表示你和朋友會待久一點，可能會一起看電影或是一起吃飯等等。
但是如果用 stop by 和 drop by，則表示你只是順道經過來看朋友，聊聊天，敘敘舊，不會待太久，之後可能還會有別的事。

come to 這個片語不可以用被動式。除了上面介紹的用法之外，下面列的一些說法也很常見！
如果要告訴別人自己「對賴比瑞亞的歷史一無所知」，就可以說：when it comes to the history of Liberia, I know nothing（一提到賴比瑞亞的歷史，我是一無所知）。
當你覺得情況每況愈下，不知道會糟到什麼田地，英文中可以用 come 來形容，那就是 what is it all coming to 或是 what is the world coming to。
再舉一個例子幫助讀者瞭解：「他起先對他太太大吼大叫，現在是動粗打她，情況不知道會糟到什麼地步」英文的表達方式是：

come to mind 這個片語不可以有被動式，一定是「想法、意見」或「虛主詞」放在句首。
come to mind 是由十三世紀的 come in mind 演變而來，這個片語常常用在一種情況：你本來記得某件事，但是一時之間忘了，突然間又想了起來，這時候就可以說 (something) comes to mind，意思就是 I think up (something)，或是 I remember (something)。
另一個和 come to mind 意思相同的類似用法是 occur。例如上面二句例句都可以用 occur 換句話說，意思仍舊一樣：
An interesting thought just occurred to me!
It occurred to me that I had forgotten to bring any money.
除了 come to mind 之外，come to 後面加上別的字，則會構成其他很常見的片語：

在使用這個片語的時候，要注意 come true 的前面一定要放 something。come true 通常會和 deram 連用，例如，在九０年代紅極一時的日本偶像團體「美夢成真」的英文團名就是 Dreams Come True。
come ture 除了可以和美夢連用，也可以和「預測」或是「惡夢」連用。我們要說「惡夢連連」的時候，就是 nightmares come true 囉！
以前的夢想在現在已經發生，我們可以用 have come true 來描述。
例如，昔日科幻小說中上演的情景，現在有些已經成真。比如說，一九八二年經典科幻名片《銀翼殺手》（Blade Runner）中有複製人，二十一世紀的現在，已經用科技製造出來。如果要問「有多少銀翼殺手的情節已經出現在現代社會上了」我們可以說 how much of Blade Runner has come true？
